Definition and Types of Flip Flop Circuits

There is a circuit type called flip flop that uses two inputs and a bistable multivibrator logic gate. Examples are computers, namely chips and memory and several other electronic devices.

On the other hand, this system can actually be applied to simple lights as long as you understand how it works. Then what is meant by flip flop? Here are detailed understanding, types, working principles and also examples on everyday electronic circuits.

Definition Flip flop is a logic circuit consisting of two stable inputs and is able to store binary data where the output is based on the input value and the previous output logic state.

The flip flop circuit can also be called an interconnected electronic component and is like a data storage memory. The stored data can be changed based on varying input values

With the concept of a bistable multivibrator that exists on Flip-flop, making this circuit has mains voltage which is stable and changes immediately if it is indeed triggered by another element.

The Flip-Flop series was first discovered by British physicists F. W. Jordan and William Eccles precisely in 1918 in England.

You need to know, flip-flop is a type electronic circuit which is capable of storing memory. That is, the principle of the flip flop is indeed made in such a way that it is able to apply logic. Various types are available according to variations and needs.

Types of Flip Flop Types

The circuit will look like two inputs where each is connected to a different output. However, there is a connection in the middle with nor and nand logic so that one input e.g. set can affect the output of another.

This is the basic type and can be developed with several variations. For example, the set position is flipped to reset and then added a second conjunction before heading to the output. JK Flip Flop Range

Jk flip flop uses three inputs namely J, K, and CLK with the CLK position in the middle. This also includes the development results of the SR system. Interestingly, there is a connection from the J and K inputs to separate outputs directly.

The job of CLK input is to make sure there is a connection from J to K and vice versa and set it to match. In this way, K can send to J’s output more briefly without having to go into the main circuit.

D Flip Flop circuit

D flip flop is the result of SR modification with the addition of a note inverter. This position is in the input part of the CLK which replaces R. There the main input is D.

Furthermore, the circuit still uses two outputs and the same configuration as the SR system. In this case, the output can only be changed at the edge of the clock, and if the input changes at a later time, the output will not be affected. Here’s for the table:

T Flip Flop circuit

The next kind of flip flop is the T type which only uses one input. From the basic SR circuit, the set and reset inputs are put together and given direct access to the two outputs separately.

It is an effective system for static and rarely changed information. This type of T has the ability to complement Toggle, that’s why its other name is Toggle Flip Flop.

How Flip-Flop Works

Basically, the way a flip flop works is the same as how  a transistor works  as a switch. Consider the flip-flop circuit image above, if the circuit is given a voltage, then one of the transistors will be in the ‘ON’ condition.

The ON condition on the transistor follows the capacitor whose charge value is higher than other capacitors. This capacitor will discharge electrical charge so that the transistor connected will be in the ON (temporary) condoso.

The transistor in ON mode will make the capacitor connected to the collector leg charged electrically. If one transistor is on then the other transistor will be in the off condition.

This will apply continuously alternately so that there is a rotation of lights called flip-flop lights. Such is the working principle of flip-flop in electronic circuits.
