Function Generator and Its Types – Function Generator or Function Generator is an electronic test device that can generate various waveforms. Waveforms that can be produced by function generators include sine waveforms (Sine Wave), Square wave (Square Wave), saw tooth wave ( Saw tooth wave ), triangular wave (Triangular wave) and pulse wave (Pulse). This function is slightly different from rf signal generator or audio signal generator which generally only focuses on the generation of sine waveforms.

Function Generators can produce frequencies of up to 20MHz depending on the manufacturer’s design. The resulting frequency can be adjusted according to our needs. In addition to frequency settings, we can also set waveforms, DC Offset and Duty Cycle. As a knowledge, DC Offset is used to change the average voltage on a signal relative to 0V or Ground. While what is meant by Duty Cycle or Work cycle is a comparison of the time when the signal reaches the ON state and when it reaches the OFF state in one signal period. In other words, the Work Cycle or Duty Cycle is a comparison of the length of time the ON condition and the OFF condition of a signal in each period. Duty Cycle setting function to change the ratio of the highest voltage to the lowest voltage to voltage on the square wave signal.

Types of Function Generators

In the market, there are several types of Function Generators that offer performance and prices that vary. The following are the types of Function Generators or Function Generators in question.

  • Analogue Function Generator – This type of Function Generator is the first Function Generator developed around the 1950s. At that time, the use of digital technology was still very limited. Although it still uses Analog Technology, this type of Function Generator has several advantages, namely relatively cheaper price, easier and simpler way to use.
  • Digital Function Generator – As the name suggests, this type of Function Generator utilizes Digital Technology to produce its waveforms. There are several techniques that can be used to evoke waveforms, but the most commonly used technique is the Direct Digital Synthesis technique or abbreviated as DDS. This Digital Function Generator is able to produce waveforms with a high degree of accuracy and stability because the circuit of the Timer system (clock) is controlled by Crystals (Crystals). Digital Funciton Generator is also capable of producing pure spectral (high spectral purity) and low phase noise ( low phase noise ). With some of the advantages of Digital Function Generator offered, the Price of Digital Function Generator becomes more expensive and operation is more complicated when compared to Analog Function Generator.
  • Sweep Function Generator – This type of Function Generator has sweep capability at its frequency. In general, sweep function generator uses digital technology, but there are also those that use analog versions. Sweep capability on this type of Function Generator can reach 100:1 or even more depending on the type of generator.
