What is RFID?

The definition of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology used to identify and retrieve data. Generally this tool works in conjunction with barcodes.

To identify, RFID uses an electromagnetic field to transfer data over short distances. The method uses a means called RFID labels. This label serves to retrieve remote data and store it.

This label is then attached to objects, humans or animals then the identification process is carried out by utilizing electromagnetic waves.

How RFID Works


Briefly, the way RFID works is to use an identification system in the form of electromagnetic waves. In order to work to identify, it needs at least a device, namely a reader and a tag.

When scanning data, it is the reader device that plays a role in capturing the signal coming from the RFID tag. The RFID principle and system work on electrical circuits by using two devices, namely tags and RFID readers.

  1. RFID Tag

This tag RFID device must be located or placed on an object or object that will later be identified by the reader. RFID tags can be both active and passive tags. The active tag means that it is a device that uses batteries. While the tag is passive without battery.

  1. RFID Reader

To read the tags requires a device called an RFID reader. This reader is also divided into two, active and passive readers. Active reader has an active reader system capable of emitting a nyal interrogator to the tag.

Meanwhile, passive readers use a passive reader system. The system receives only electromagnetic signals from active tags that work only with battery power sources. This passive RFIS reader can even reach up to 600 meters. Therefore this device allows for checking as well as asset protection.

In its working system, RFID is a technology that uses various wavepaths to emit signals. However, among the many signals used, the most frequently used RFID frequency is at the frequency of 865-868MHz & 902-928MHz UHF band.

Advantages & Disadvantages of RFID

Every technology in electronic components that is created must always have more value and shortcomings. Likewise with this Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

RFID tags today are even considered a substitute for barcodes because the system and how it works are more effective than barcodes. In addition, this technology also offers more advantages. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of this RFID technology.

  • Save More Time

The first plus of this technology is that it is more effective. This is because the way this technology works is already able to read up to hundreds of IDs at a time. In contrast to barcodes that have to do readings one by one so that they are considered less effective.

  • Easier reading than manual systems

When compared to barcodes or manual systems, this technology is considered more effective and easier to read. This is because RFID tags can be read even when just passing by or being near the RFID Reader. In fact, when covered in other objects such as being inside a container or covered in cardboard, the tag can remain legible.

  • More Durable

RFID tags are superior in terms of their durability. RFID tags are more resistant to water and friction. This is considered more profitable because when used, before being inserted into the object, the chip must be inserted into the plastic and then put into the object.

In addition to the previously mentioned advantages, this technology still has disadvantages. One of the shortcomings that is still an obstacle is that the price is still quite expensive.

But this is no longer a big problem, because recently the equipment and tags have been able to be obtained at a more affordable price.

RFID technology in fact provides many benefits that can be utilized for various fields of life. The most familiar example of the use and application of RFID in everyday life is in supermarkets to identify when shopping.

Another example that is most often encountered from electronic circuits in  the use of RFID technology is in toll payment systems without direct contact. By using this technology, payments are faster, more effective and there is no need for direct contact.
